Nelly was born in Vienna in 1899. She married into a Czechoslovakian family that were involved in manufacturing. She and her family fled Europe in 1939 at the onset of WWI, selling a family Stradivarius violin for immigration money.
Having spent some time in Lisbon, Nelly was taken with Portuguese pleated and printed cotton fabrics. She used these as inspiration for the collection of skirts she designed when she arrived in New York. She took samples to the Peck & Peck store on Fifth Avenue and they placed an order with her.
By 1955, Nelly was a large company headquartered on Seventh Avenue with features in Vogue magazine. She specialized in mix and match separates and brought versatility to evening wear by offering tops in skirts in fabrics like taffeta and brocade that looked like dresses when worn together.
She continued to design until her death in 1972.
Lowell Hudson took over as designer of the company and it stayed in business until 1976.
